The Butterfly Wasn't Dreaming Alone: Zhuangzi and the Spirit of Jesus
Other Names for Logos
“Am I a man who dreamt of being a butterfly,
or a butterfly now dreaming I am a man?”
Zhuangzi (庄子, Zhuāngzǐ), the wandering sage of ancient China, laughed at rigidity, questioned permanence, and trusted the freedom of the Way (道, Dao). He was not interested in rules or rituals. He wanted us to flow with reality—not control it.
If Mozi gave us moral clarity, and Laozi gave us the rhythm of return, then Zhuangzi gave us wings.
His stories are parables of paradox. Dreams blur with waking. Death is not an enemy but a transformation. And like Jesus, he taught through humor, inversion, and gentle subversion.
Both Zhuangzi and Jesus refused to be trapped by power structures. Both challenged narrow certainty. Both invited us into a deeper freedom—one born not of escape, but of trust.

🪶 A Poetic Ending
The butterfly does not build empires.
It does not cling to doctrine.
It dances, it pollinates, it trusts the wind.Zhuangzi knew the dream was not less real—it was more.
And Jesus walked through walls,
breathed peace into fear,
and said, “Do not be afraid.”
🪶 Pastoral Charge
Let go of the illusion that you must have all the answers.
Let go of the pressure to perform your worth.
Let go of the fear that keeps you from flying.
This world needs more dreamers.
More butterflies.
More people who trust the Wind of God’s Spirit.
🪶 Benediction
May you wake gently from the dream of control,
and walk lightly into the grace of becoming.
May the Dao lead you,
and the Spirit free you,
until you flutter with joy
into the kingdom already here.
